tough as nails

Sarah Kaufmann has won several endurance mountain bike races and placed 2nd in the 24 Hours of Moab, which doubled as the national championships, a couple of weeks ago.
from what i could tell she's also pretty rad...

So how did you go about this shoot exactly. Jump on a bike with her and tell her not to kick too much ass on the trail or what? Did you have to rush ahead in order to get candids or did she just wait for you. I ask because I had a similar shoot a few months ago. Just curious how you went about yours. Oh and great work btw. :)

Well, the candids aren't exactly candids. in the caption i wrote something along the lines of 'rides down a hill during a portrait shoot.'
The jump looks more 'lit' in color, for some reason the colors were kind of strange though and i liked it better in b&w. It's not exactly the best it can be, i admit, but it was fun trying things out.
So what we did was, we met at a trailhead, put a couple of lights on her and shot most portraits. Lights also for the jump.
Then the sun came out and I shot no 1.
for the third one in the tri-ptic (or whatever you wanna call it) we used a diffuser, which matt found in his car and i had never used before. i kinda liked it and considering that she stands in hard, direct sunlight, it's nice and soft on her face.
i'm really bad with lights. the fact that ours kind of work on and off whenever they feel like it didn't make it easier. matt helped, which was priceless. we kind of tried to piece it together as we went and he did everything except for push the shutter. plus, sarah didn't mind jumping over that thing about 10 times and waiting at the top until we thought we had it figured out.
how did you go about yours, drew? did you ride with them?

No problem, glad you like them. Maybe see you in Tucson in Feb. -- I'm trying to make it this year...
